Treaty #3 Land Acknowledgment
As LOWDSA provides leadership, education and communication on topics affecting the Lake of the Woods region, we hope everyone will take some time to reflect on the longstanding stewardship of this land by Indigenous Peoples.
Treaty #3 is home to 28 Anishinaabe Nations who have been stewards of this land since time immemorial, fulfilling sacred relationships and responsibilities that have taken care of the natural spaces we love. The region is also home to Métis communities in the Métis Nation of Ontario’s Lake of the Woods/Lac Seul and Rainy Lake/Rainy River traditional territories.
The Lake of the Woods Area and LOWDSA’s activities take place in the territory of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 and the traditional homelands of the Métis Nation of Ontario. The beautiful lakes, shorelines, and environment that we enjoy should be respected for their cultural significance and history.
LOWDSA hopes to honour this in our own relationships with the land, water, fish, wildlife, and other aspects that are culturally significant to Indigenous Nations through our mission to preserve one of the most beautiful places on earth as a high-quality environment for future generations to enjoy.
